William Langer graduated from UND in 1906 and had a long career in politics. He was North Dakota Attorney General from 1917 until 1920 and served twice as Governor: from 1933 to 1934 and from 1937 until 1939. Elected to the United States Senate in 1941, he served until his death in 1959.

This letter dated November 21, 1949, from Mrs. Donald Dike to United States (US) Senator William Langer asks Langer why items included in US House Resolution No. 33 were struck from a related US Senate bill. Dike argues that a number of items should be put back in, including electric power, a tax exemption, and the “use of the bottom land until they are moved to a new location.”

In this letter, dated July 26, 1949, from Lieutenant General C.W. Huebner, Commanding General of the United States (US) Army, Europe, to US Senator William Langer, Huebner replies to Langer's Letter of June 24 regarding convicted Nazi war criminal Dr. Martin Sandberger, who had been sentenced to death by the Nuremberg Tribunal II in Case No. 9, the Einsatzgruppen Case.
Huebner acknowledges receipt of Langer's letter of June 24, 1949, and also references his own letter to Langer, dated June 27, as well as letters he received from Langer dated May 25 and June 1, 1949.
Huebner writes that he has forwarded the referenced documents to the Legal Division, U.S. Office of Military Government for consideration in the final review of the case.

This letter, dated October 7, 1949, from United States (US) Senator William Langer to Ben Reifel, Superintendent of the Fort Berthold Reservation of North Dakota, makes reference to an earlier letter Langer sent Reifel regarding additional funds Langer was able to secure for North Dakota tribes. In the current letter, Langer gives a breakdown of the additional funding distributed to the Fort Berthold Agency for Health, Education and Welfare on the Fort Berthold Reservation.
In addition to this breakdown, Langer also includes as an attachment a report he received from John H. Provinse, Assistant Commissioner of the US Bureau of Indian Affairs, that includes a breakdown of funds distributed to other reservations in the state.

This letter, dated October 13, 1949, from United States (US) Senator William Langer to Floyd Montclair of Elbowoods, North Dakota, member of the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Fort Berthold Reservation and vice president of the National American Indian Defense Association, Inc., makes reference to an enclosed report from E. Barton Greenwood of the US Bureau of Indian Affairs in reply to Langer's inquiry on Montclair's behalf regarding the possibility of E. O. Morrow's being appointed Superintendent of the Fort Berthold Indian Agency.
In the enclosed letter, dated October 7, Greenwood explains that Reginald W. Quinn, Chief Clerk at the Forth Berthold Agency, has been designated Acting Superintendent while Superintendent Ben Reifel is on a nine-month leave of absence to attend Harvard University, and will remain so "until such time as we determine whether it will be necessary to appoint a superintendent to the position pending Mr. Reifel's return."
Greenwood goes on to write that, in the event it is decided to fill Reifel's position, Morrow will receive "every consideration along with other qualified employees in the Indian Service."

This letter dated May 5, 1949, from United States (US) Senator William Langer to Three Affiliated Tribes member Ira Waters, thanks Waters for his recent letter regarding the delegates appointed by the Three Affiliated Tribes Tribal Council to go to Washington, D.C. According to Waters, these delegates were selected without the full consent of the reservation. Langer says that he is glad that Waters and others had selected Cross to come to Washington D.C. to represent their views on what Langer refers to as the "land situation." Based on other correspondences, the "land situation" is likely a reference to the Garrison Dam and US House Joint Resolution 33 (H.J. 33).
Two handwritten notes on the letter read, "Cross, Martin," and "See Indians."
H.J. 33 became Public Law 81-437 or "An Act to Vest Title to Certain Lands of the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Fort Berthold Reservation, North Dakota, in the United States, and to provide Compensation Therefor," better known as "The Taking Act."

O. Morrow is appointed Superintendent of the Fort Berthold Indian Agency.
Enclosed with the letter from Montclair was a letter Montclair had sent to Langer, Nichols and US Secretary of the Interior Julius Albert Krug, also requesting that Morrow be appointed Superintendent of the Fort Berthold Indian Agency.
Langer quotes relevant passages from the letter Montclair had sent only to him, and asks Nichols to sent his "information and recommendations" at his earliest convenience.

This letter dated August 8, 1949, from United States (US) Senator William Langer to Mrs. W. J. Chapin of Hankinson, North Dakota, refers to Chapin's recent letter of support for US Senate Joint Resolution 11.
Langer thanks Chapin for her letter and writes that he is sending her, under separate cover, a copy of the Congressional Record of July 6, "which outlines the Senate Amendments to the companion measure, US House Joint Resolution 33." He further explains that the US House of Representatives "disagreed with the [US] Senate amendments and, consequently, requested a Conference," naming the conferees who were appointed to reconcile the disagreement.
Langer pledges to secure early enactment of the legislation and invites Chapin to share suggestions for how he may be of further assistance.

H.J. 33 became Public Law 81-437 or "An Act to Vest Title to Certain Lands of the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Fort Berthold Reservation, North Dakota, in the United States, and to provide Compensation Therefor" better known as "The Taking Act."
