The University of North Dakota (UND) Chester Fritz Library in collaboration with the UND Center for Human Rights and Genocide Studies and the UND Department of English created the “Nuremberg Trials Digital Collections: Nazi Occupation of Norway” from documents preserved in Library’s Nuremberg Trials Collection. Over 1,100 documents relating to the Nazi invasion and occupation of Norway (1940 -1944) have been digitized and transcribed. The Nazi Occupation of Norway digital materials are organized into the “Hostage Case” and the “High Command Case” and feature indictments, arraignments, opening and closing statements, and testimony as well as evidentiary documents and maps from the case files.
This project was begun in 2008 and completed in 2013. The documents on this site were digitized by undergraduate and graduate students in UND English 417 and English 428 courses. The materials were transcribed by members of the digitization team and then verified to ensure accuracy. When a word or letter was unclear, it has been marked as [illegible] or placed in brackets. With the exception of removing hyphens noting a break in a word over a line, the text appears as it does in the original. Page images are also presented as part of the collection.
The original concept of the project was envisioned by Gregory Gordon, director of the UND Center for Human Rights and Genocide Studies and associate professor of Law. Dr. Crystal Alberts, assistant professor in the Department of English, directed the digitization project and supervised the student work. Curt Hanson, head of the Elwyn B. Robinson Department of Special Collections consulted on the organization of the Nuremberg Trial Collection and Will Martin, the Library’s web site developer, provided technical expertise for the project. The project was funded in part by a generous donation from the Norges Hjemmefrontmuseum in Oslo Norway.
Student members contributing to the project included Brianna Berg, Brock Berglund, Rebekah Billings, Meghan Brown, Erin Carr, Alex Cavanaugh, Sally Cook, Laura Cory, Holly Edwards, John Fitzgerald, Nick Gowan, Lucy Hartmann, Douglas Haugen, Andrea Herbst, Debrah Iverson, Betsy Jensen, Brandon Jordan, Brooke LaDouceur, Whitney Ledger, Kari Mitchell, Stephanie Myers, Kaylee Nesdahl, Abbey Numedahl, Jennifer Pierce, Michael Raatz, Jennifer Steele, Mary Stromme, Katy Thiel, Ericka Erickson, Brad Rose, Devon Olson, Lindsey Humfeld, Jordan Thiery, Nathan Guillemette, Phil Brockman, and Jamie Hutchinson.
This project has been made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the human endeavor. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this website, do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
