Abstract
Southeast Judicial District Judge Thomas E. Merrick has announced that he will not seek reelection. His current term expires at the end of 2016.
In a letter to Chief Justice Gerald VandeWalle, Merrick said, "It has been an honor and a blessing to serve the people of North Dakota as a district judge."
Judge Merrick was appointed Southeast Judicial District Judge in 2009 by Gov. John Hoeven. He was elected to the post in 2012.
Born in Elkhart, Ind., Merrick received his bachelor's degree from the University of Toledo. He served in the U.S. Air Force, reaching the rank of captain. He earned his law degree from the UND School of Law in 1983 and was in private legal practice in Jamestown from 1983-2009.
