Artist Bio
Daniel Shipton works primarily in colored pencil, a medium he has embraced for the control and visual impact it offers after earlier work in acrylic, oil, and clay. His drawings, rendered in vivid pop-art color, explore both overtly beautiful subjects like diamonds and ordinary objects that share similar jewel-like qualities, drawing on nostalgia to question the significance humanity places on itself. Shipton describes his style as Hyperrealist Surrealism, a deliberately playful contradiction reflecting both his technique and the contemporary, often lighthearted outlook of his work. Initially self-taught, he later trained under the personal mentorship of other artists, and cites CJ Hendry, Salvador Dalí, and L.S. Lowry among his key influences.
Additional Information
From the artist: "This Drawing of a green lightbulb was inspired by my childhood and a memory of these bulbs jewel like quality, similar to diamonds and emeralds. Playing with scale and this nostalgia I seek to highlight how in the grander scheme of life we as individuals are but a cog among the wider wonders of the world and and our collective achievements. Its by no mistake that something as amazing as the creation of light is so significant to us as an innovation and something which is part of creation stories across the world."
