Journal Information
The Cicadian publishes works of scholarship and creative non-fiction, critical essays, book and film reviews, as well as works of poetry, visual arts and soundscapes.
All submissions must be original work, not published elsewhere, and center upon relationships to nature and/or natural spaces. Submissions can explore nature-based relationships, stories of place, belonging and dwelling, and experiential and embodied scholarship rooted in relationships with natural spaces.
We accept original work that stylistically represents the standard in your field (APA, MLA, Harvard, etc). Works of scholarship must be submitted using Word integrated in Zotero or Mendeley to facilitate our editorial team accepting a diversity of academic/scholarly styles.
We have the following categories open for submission. Please review our submission guidelines for specific requirements. Submissions are initially reviewed by editorial board members to ensure they meet our aims and then moved on to be reviewed by at least 2 peer reviewers.
Works of Scholarship
We accept original, creative works of scholarship that explore a diverse range of relational approaches to research, including narrative, ethnographic, arts-based, advocacy, ecological, and conceptual pieces as they relate to nature/natural spaces. You may submit one piece of up to 4,000 words. Excerpts from longer works are welcome, but they must be able to stand on their own and not published elsewhere.
Creative Works - Creative non-fiction
The Cicadian is open to submissions of original, creative nonfiction, personal essays and literary journalism that reflect a relationship to nature/natural spaces. You can submit one essay of up to 4,000 words, or a packet (not to exceed 4,000 words) of up to 3 micro- or flash-length nonfiction. Excerpts from longer works are welcome, but they must be able to stand on their own and not published elsewhere.
Works of poetry, photography & drawing
The Cicadian accepts submissions of poetry and visual arts, such as photography, painting and drawings
- Poetry-open to all genres; series or packet of poetry (not to exceed 1,000 words).
- Photography with Reflection/Commentary-Color, Black and White; series or packet up to 6 original photographs and reflection/commentary (not to exceed 500 words).
- Painting, Drawings and Sketches with Reflection/Commentary-charcoal, pencil, pen; series or packet up to 6 original drawings and reflection/commentary (not to exceed 500 words).
Book and film reviews & recommendations
The Cicadian accepts reviews and commentaries on books and films related to human/nature relationships, sense of place, belonging and dwelling. You may submit one review of up to 500 words.
Soundscapes
The Cicadian accepts audio sound recordings with an included narrative description that provides an immersive sound experience reflecting human/nature relationships, sense of place, belonging and dwelling.
