In this audiovisual recording from Friday, March 27, 1998, as part of the 29th Annual UND Writers Conference: “the use of [HISTORY]," August Wilson, John Hanson, Susan Yuzna, and Toi Derricotte participate in a panel called “History and Genre.” The panelists discuss their approaches to genre, writing from experience, their notions of history, the potentials of poetry, playwriting, fiction, nonfiction, and film, what motivates them to write in these forms, creative expression as an interpretation of humanity and history, writing for audience, how background influences point-of-view, the influence of spirituality, the self and existentialism, the politics of their work, trends of reading in the United States, work habits, the state of publishing, and activist literature.
