New UND Red River Trio on tour in Japan and China

Abstract

The University of North Dakota Red River Trio , which includes two new members, is on a three-week tour that includes stops in Japan and China. Their schedule is appended below.

"This year's trio is a unique group comprising a soprano, a cello, and piano," said the Trio's advisor and UND Music faculty member Nariaki Sugiura. "They have given numerous well attended concerts on and off campus this semester."

In Shanghai, the trio will collaborate with students and faculty members of East China Normal University.

"We will perform the same program at University of Shanghai Science and Technology the following evening," Sugiura said. "In Kanuma, Japan (Grand Forks' sister city), we will collaborate with Kanuma East Junior High School Orchestra as well as a local choir group 'Poco a Poco.'"

The trio receives primary financial support from Gerald Gaul; Amy Muiderman and Donna Hastings hosted fundraiser concerts at their houses. David Williamson also made substantial contribution this year, according to Sugiura.

  • June 4: Collaboration Concert in Kanuma (with Kanuma East Junior High School / Poco a Poco Choir group)
  • June 5: Departure from Tokyo

About the Red River Trio:

The "New" Red River Trio consists of three select music students from the University of North Dakota Music Department. They began performing together in 2013 under the direction of Nariaki Sugiura and Simona Barbu, both UND Music faculty.

Vocalist Anna Andersson, Arthur, N.D., began her vocal studies at the age of 12 and studied clarinet for seven years. Andersson graduated from Northern Cass High School and was selected to sing in state honor choirs and competed at the state level in solo voice competitions. She is majoring in Music Therapy.

Andersson has worked as the ethnic music coordinator and choir director at a Swedish immersion language camp for children. She was in the UND Concert Choir and the Värmlands Nation's Choir in Uppsala, Sweden.

Cellist Kara Hartten, Redding, Conn., performed the Lalo cello concerto with the Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestra in 2007 as the winner of its concerto competition. Most recently she performed Mendelssohn's Octet in E-flat major with internationally known cellist Yo-Yo Ma in 2011.

She began her musical studies at the age of 5 in her hometown.

After completing both a Bachelor of Music Performance and a Bachelor of Arts in French at DePauw University, in Greencastle, Ind., Hartten continued her musical and cultural studies in France.

She is pursuing a Master of Music degree in cello performance under Simona Barbu. In addition to working as the graduate teaching assistant in cello and orchestra, Hartten performs with the Greater Grand Forks Symphony and Bismarck Mandan Symphony Orchestras, as well as teaches private cello lessons.

Red River Trio pianist Keith Teepen has performed in Europe, Asia, South America and throughout North America. His most recent performances include concerts in China, Japan, and Brazil. He has taught on the piano faculty at Pró-Música Music Festival in Juiz de Fora, Brazil, as well as the International Music Camp at the Peace Garden.

Teepen is a continuing member of the Red River Trio.

After earning a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from DePauw University School of Music, he received a scholarship to study with Gerald Stofsky in Vienna, Austria.

He is a graduate teaching assistant pursuing a Master of Music degree in piano performance under Sugiura.
