About the UND Opera Gala

The University of North Dakota Department of Music will host its second annual Opera Gala, Friday, May 2, at the Masonic Temple Auditorium, downtown Grand Forks.

Audiences will enjoy an evening of operetta (the 19th century version of music theatre) and dynamic orchestral works. The cast consists of auditioned UND voice students and UND voice faculty members Royce Blackburn, Anne Christopherson, Wesley Lawrence, and Catherine Tlusty. The UND Chamber Orchestra under the direction of UND Music faculty member Alejandro Drago will join in the performance of excerpts from The Mikado and Ruddigore (Gilbert & Sullivan); Le Mariage aux Lanternes and La Vie Parisienne (Offenbach); and Die Fledermaus (Johann Strauss, Jr.).

"We are excited to present another Opera Gala event to our community," said UND Music faculty member and associate department chair Anne Christopherson.

"Last year's performance was so well received we just had to do it again," said Christopherson, who's producing, and performs in, the gala. "An 'Exceptional UND' enriches student learning through collaboration, and this UND Music event is certainly an embodiment of that."

The Masonic Temple was built in 1913 by Joseph Bell DeRemerafter a fire destroyed the original. It was added to National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
