Abstract

GRAND FORKS, N.D.—University of North Dakota Vice President for Health Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences Joshua Wynne and Senior Associate Dean Gwen W. Halaas invite you to join them in welcoming Jau-Shin Lou, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., as founding chair of the Dr. Roger Gilbertson Endowed Chair of Neurology at the School. The event will be held on Monday, Feb. 3, from 2 to 3 p.m., with a brief program at 2 p.m., in the Vennes Atrium at the School, 501 North Columbia Road, Grand Forks. Refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Lou, a prominent neurologist, was named the founding Dr. Roger Gilbertson Endowed Chair of Neurology in December. At the SMHS, he will teach medical students and post-M.D. residents in addition to his administrative responsibilities in neurology. Lou will also spend half of his time seeing patients with neurological problems at Sanford Health in Fargo, where he will serve as the chair of Sanford's neurology department.

He is widely recognized for his clinical trials in Lou Gehrig's disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS) and fatigue associated with Parkinson's disease. He was voted one ofU.S. News & World Report's Best Doctors 2011–12. He had served as a teacher, clinician, and scientist in the Department of Neurology at the Oregon Health and Science University School of Medicine in Portland, which he joined in 1999 and where he most recently was a professor and director of the ALS/Neuromuscular Diseases Center and Electromyography Laboratory.
