UND’s Harmon Abrahamson inducted into elite chemistry organization

Abstract

The American Chemical Society (ACS) has selected University of North Dakota Professor of chemistry Harmon Abrahamson to its 2013 class of ACS Fellows.

This prestigious honor was awarded to just 96 distinguished scientists based on documented leadership and excellence along with scientific or technical contribution to ACS, the world's largest scientific society.

Abrahamson, alongside the 2013 class, was recognized recently at an induction ceremony for the society's 246th national meeting, which took place in Indianapolis.

Abrahamson has been a member of ACS for more than 30 years.

"It's quite an honor," Abrahamson said.

Abrahamson once chaired the ACS Council Committee on Constitution and Bylaws in addition to his specific research in photochemistry.

"He has been very active in the organization and is very deserving of it," said Dr. David Pierce, professor and chairman of the Chemistry department. "It is a big deal to be elected as a fellow -- a great honor."

The ACS Fellow Program was created in December 2008 to recognize members of the organization for achievements and contributions to science, the profession, and the Society. Members retain the designation as an ACS Fellow for life.
