Abstract

The University of North Dakota’s Department of Music will present Silent Night, Winter Light, a Winter Wunderland Holiday Concert in the Chester Fritz Auditorium Friday, Nov. 30, at 8 p.m. This holiday extravaganza will feature more than 250 of UND’s finest musicians, performing a collection of timeless holiday music, from popular holiday songs to classic carols and everything in between.

Silent Night, Winter Light will include performances by the UND Concert Choir, Varsity Bards, Allegro Women’s Choir, Vivo Women’s Ensemble, student soloists, and special guests, the UND Trombone Choir, and Cello Ensemble.

This year’s holiday concert presentation by the choirs marks vast growth in the choral program over the years. The department has expanded from three full time faculty members to the need for six full time faculty members, including two full time choral professors and four full time voice professors. New choirs have been added to the program to showcase the steady increase in talented young singers in the choral program.

Two choirs, in particular have seen a tremendous increase in members. The Varsity Bards has tripled in size over the last six years to over 70 young men, while Allegro Women’s Choir has doubled in size to 105 singers.

The Winter Wunderland annual concert will also serve as a fundraising opportunity for the choirs. Last year, the Concert Choir had the distinct honor of performing in Madison, Wis. at the prestigious North Central division of the American Choral Director Association convention. In previous years, the choirs have toured within the United States, and internationally in the Netherlands and Belgium.

This year, the Concert Choir will be leaving in May for a concert tour of Cuba. Concert touring continues to be a goal of the choral faculty for all of the choirs in the future. The Department of Music depends on support from the concert going community to provide talented young students with scholarships to attend the fine music school here at UND. Proceeds from Silent Night, Winter Light will help to assist the choirs in offsetting the costs of concert tours and provide scholarships for young musicians.

The UND Choral Department is proud to offer an exciting new holiday tradition to the University and Grand Forks community to celebrate this special time of year. While students can take time to immerse themselves in the magic of the season, families can begin a new holiday tradition, one that everyone can look forward to year after year. Join us, and surround yourself in the spirit of the holidays as you are captivated and entertained by the songs of the season at Silent Night, Winter Light.
