Abstract

The librarians and staff of the University of North Dakota Chester Fritz Library invite you to the annual Elwyn B. Robinson Lecture, featuring a very special presentation by Mr. Jay Jordan, President and Chief Executive Officer of OCLC.

Mr. Jordan will offer his perspectives on the world of libraries and information services. This is the first time Mr. Jordan has visited North Dakota and we hope you will join us for this notable event.

In addition to Mr. Jordan’s presentation, the Library will issue the annual Bibliography of UND Scholarship. The Bibliography compiles the publications and creative activities of UND faculty, staff and students. This is the most comprehensive publication of UND scholarship and is compiled as a service to the University community.

About Jay Jordan

Jay Jordan is the fourth president of OCLC serving since 1998. He came to OCLC after a 24-year career with Information Handling Services, an international publisher of databases. Prior to joining IHS, he held positions with the 3M Corporation in Europe and the United States. He graduated from Colgate University in 1965 with a B.A. in English literature and served as a U.S. Army officer in Germany. He has spent more than seven years living and working outside the United States.

Mr. Jordan is active in professional organizations, including the American Library Association and the Special Libraries Association. He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Library Administration, serves on the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) Board of Visitors for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and is a board member of the Governing Board for Publishing of the American Chemical Society.

Founded in 1967, OCLC is a nonprofit, membership, computer library service and research organization dedicated to the public purposes of furthering access to the world’s information and reducing library costs. OCLC and its member libraries cooperatively produce and maintain WorldCat, the world’s largest online database for discovery of library resources.

Under Mr. Jordan’s leadership, the OCLC cooperative has grown from 30,000 to more than 72,000 libraries, archives and museums. The number of participating institutions outside the U.S. has increased from 3,200 in 64 countries to 16,215 in 170 countries. At the same time, the OCLC cooperative has become global in its governance, with regional councils sending delegates to a new OCLC Global Council.

Since 1998, the WorldCat bibliographic database has grown from 38 million records to more than 240 million, and the number of location listings attached to those records has increased from 668 million to more than 1.7 billion. In 2006, WorldCat became available to people everywhere on the Internet. In recent years, OCLC has built a new technological platform, introduced new Web-scale services and created a library advocacy program.
