Abstract

Glenn Olsen, professor and department chair in the Department of Teaching & Learning at the University of North Dakota, recently published the fourth edition of his book, Home and School Relations: Teachers and Parents Working Together.

The first edition came out in 1999 and the most recent version was released in April. The book was co-edited and co-authored by UND Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor Emerita of Social Work Mary Lou Fuller. There are also many UND authors who contributed to different chapters from including Assistant Professors of Teaching & Learning Pamela Beck, Kari Chiasson, and Associate Provost and Associate Professor Emerita of Early Childhood Education Sara Hanhan.

The book examines the nature of the contemporary family and its relationship to the school, and provides practical advice for developing strong home-school relationships and solid examples of building good home-school partnerships and fostering parent involvement.

In addition to covering the traditional topic of ethnic families, change in families, and parent-teacher communication, this practical and popular text delves further into issues facing families today and their effect on families, including income level, the father's role, family and domestic violence, and bullying and school violence.
