Abstract

James R. Eissinger, of Lubbock, Texas, died July 13, 2017.

He was born the youngest child of Henry and Pauline Eissinger in Burnstad, North Dakota. Jim graduated valedictorian of his senior class in his hometown of Wishek, North Dakota.

During his years at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, he received a Fulbright scholarship which enabled him to attend the University of Heidelberg in Heidelberg, Germany. Jim earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Wartburg in 1960 while majoring in philosophy.

Next, Jim received his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of North Dakota in 1964 where he graduated at the top of his class. After a period of practicing law, Jim served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force in the Judge Advocate General's Corps. He later served as an attorney on the law enforcement council, a division of the Attorney General's Office in North Dakota.

Jim then became a member of the faculty of the University of North Dakota School of Law. He joined the Texas Tech School of Law faculty in 1972. During his tenure at Texas Tech, he served as professor, associate dean and interim dean. Jim received several Outstanding Law Professor Awards from his students. He loved teaching and despite his retirement, he continued to teach part time.

Preceding him in death are his parents, brother, LeRoy Eissinger and his sister, Stella Fox. Survivors include his wife, Mary, of forty-five years, his sister, Delores Erbele of Bloomington, MN and Ann Byrd of Holliday, TX, and his very dear nieces and nephews. Jim loved his family, travel, nature and wildlife.

He was of the Lutheran faith. Private Services will be held. Memorial suggestions might include the South Plains Wildlife Center or the Lubbock Memorial Arboretum.
