Abstract
District Judge David Nelson has announced his resignation effective December 31, 2016. He is the presiding judge in the Northwest Judicial District.
Nelson announced his resignation in a letter to Governor Jack Dalrymple and Chief Justice Gerald VandeWalle.
The Supreme Court is required by law to determine if the judgeship should be retained, moved, or eliminated. It would be filled by appointment.
Nelson was elected district judge in 1994 and re-elected in 1996, 2002, 2008 and 2014.
Prior to becoming a district judge, Nelson was in private practice in Williston, serving as a municipal judge from 1984-1994. He is a 1981 graduate of the University of North Dakota School of Law. He earned an undergraduate degree in social work at UND-Williston in 1971 and also attended Wartburg Theological Seminary.
