Abstract

This year, we were pleased to welcomed three new faculty members to the Social Work Department. We are excited to have their expertise and talent at UND!

Barbara Kitko, MSW, LSW, Assistant Professor

Professor Kitko graduate with an MSW in 2002 and BSSW from UND in 1988. She was an adjunct faculty member with the Department of Social Work at UND prior to joining the department full-time in August, 2015. She has more than 25 years of direct social work practice. Her work history includes 17 years as a school social worker for the Grand Forks Public Schools. Prior to her employment with Grand Forks Public Schools, she served as a case manager, direct services supervisor and as the director of the Region IV Children’s Services Coordinating Committee/Families First. Over the past 25 years she has provided supervision to numerous BSSW and MSW student interns. In her free time she enjoys working out, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

Yi-Ping Hsieh, Ph.D., Assistant Professor

Dr. Hsieh has an undergraduate degree in Medical Sociology and Social Work and a master’s degree in Language Education. She earned her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology with a minor in Counseling from Indiana University-Bloomington in 2009. Right after graduation, she worked at the Department of Medical Humanities and Social Sciences at Florida State University as a postdoctoral research associate and focused on mental health related research. After her postdoctoral experience, Dr. Hsieh worked as an assistant professor at the Department of Medical Sociology and Social Work at Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan for two years. She then went on to work at the Institute of Education at National Cheng Kung University for three years. After her five year career as an assistant professor in Taiwan, she moved to Grand Forks, and currently works at UND as an assistant professor and an interdisciplinary scholar within the Department of Social Work and the College of Nursing and Professional Disciplines. Dr. Hsieh collaborates with scholars from various disciplines in Taiwan on a national Longitudinal Study of Children and Adolescents’ Family and Social Experiences. Her research interests include child maltreatment, parenting, domestic violence, behavioral and mental health problems of children and adolescents, and problematic internet use.

Todd Sage, MSW, LCSW, LAC – Assistant Professor, NCWWI & Title IV-E Coordinator

Todd Sage has worked primarily as a Child Protective Services working in Oregon and North Dakota. His career has also included work as a Guardian ad Litem, a hospital Social Worker, a Child Forensic Interviewer, and a Disability Analyst. He is a licensed addiction counselor in Oregon and North Dakota. His current research and practice interests include the use of motivational interviewing in child welfare, ICWA compliance, ethical use of social media, and addressing North Dakota’s child welfare workforce shortage through higher education and improvements and post-graduate supports. He received his BASW from California State University, San Bernardino in 2005, and his MSW from Portland State University in 2008. He completed his addictions studies at Portland Community College in 2007.
