Abstract

  • The Recruitment and Retention of American Indians into Nursing (RAIN) program celebrated its 25th Anniversary this fall! Since the program started it has graduated 180 American Indian nurses with their bachelor degrees and 52 American Indian nurses with their master’s degrees. Faculty, staff, students, and alumni will commemorate this momentous occasion with a celebration this spring.
  • Nursing Clinical Associate Professor, Dr. Darlene Hanson, was selected as a participant in the National League for Nursing’s Simulation Leadership program. She has presented several posters at regional and national conferences this past year on simulation topics. Dr. Hanson has also coordinated interdisciplinary simulations with the UND Medical School.
  • Three Nursing faculty were selected as National League for Nursing on-site reviewers, Linda Shanta, Kris Stellon, and Stacie Olson.
  • Danielle Kelliher, Nursing student, was selected as the 2015 Student Nurse of the Year. The qualifications for this award are that the SNOY must possess educational, professional, emotional, and personal qualities that make the person a role model for student nurses, faculty, and nurses alike. Dani will represent UND at the Nursing Student Association of North Dakota’s State Student Nurse of the Year competition on January 28th in Bismarck, ND.
  • The RAIN program was recently awarded $555,152 in funding from the MHA (Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara) Nation to address educational and employment needs in Indian country.
  • Halley Maas, currently in her third semester of nursing courses, was crowned Miss North Dakota USA 2016. She will be serving as Miss North Dakota USA for the next year, as well as competing for the national title
  • Joanna Sikkema, Clinical Assistant Professor, participated in the National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease Policy and Science Summit in Washington, DC in October. The Summit identified ways to improve diagnosis and treatment of the leading cause of death in women: heart disease.
  • Doctor of Nursing Practice highlights:
    • The CNPD DNP program began the semester with its third cohort of students.
    • The DNP program received notice of our initial CCNE accreditation.
    • 2015 DNP graduate, Michelle Ullery, FNP-BC had her abstract, “Improving Nutrition in Overweight and Obese Adults with Physical Disabilities” accepted for presentation at the MNRS Conference in March 2016.
    • 2015 DNP graduate, Dr. Bettina Thompson presented her DNP Capstone: “Preparing Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists for Rural Practice with a Simulated Module of Local Anesthetic Systemic Toxicity Utilizing an American Society of Regional Anesthesia Checklists” at the Mayo Clinic Seminar for Nurse Anesthetists in October 2015.
  • Four Nursing Doctoral students either completed or will be presenting their doctoral examinations this fall.
    • Jeanine Senti, a PhD candidate in Nursing successfully completed her PhD exam on November 17th. The title of her dissertation was: “The Relationship Between a Series of Vitamin D levels and a Blood Glucose Level in pregnant Women in the Upper Midwest.” Dr. Jody Ralph (Nursing) is the committee chair.
    • Amy Witt, PhD candidate in Nursing’s doctoral examination is set for December 10th. Her dissertation is titled: “The Impact of the Cultural Encounter on the Cultural Competence of Baccalaureate Nursing Students.” Dr. Glenda Lindseth (Nursing) is the committee chair.
    • Carol Reid, a PhD candidate in Nursing’s doctoral examination is set for December 8th. Her dissertation is titled: “Thinking Like a Nurse: The Impact of Simulation and Clinical Experiences on Clinical Judgement in Prelicensure Nursing Students.” Dr. Jody Ralph (Nursing) is the committee chair.
    • Deborah Matthias- Anderson, a Ph.D. candidate in Nursing, doctoral examination is set for December 10th Her dissertation title is: "The Process of Work Re-entry for Nurses after Substance Use Disorders Treatment: A Grounded Theory Study." Dr. Glenda Lindseth (Nursing) is the committee chair.
