Abstract

Oral history interview with Don Loeslie of Warren, Minnesota, conducted on August 15, 2025. The interviewer was Curt Hanson from the Elwyn B. Robinson Department of Special Collections at the Chester Fritz Library, University of North Dakota. In addition to being a lifelong farmer, Loeslie has been involved with and has led several national agricultural organizations, including the National Association of Wheat Growers.

In this first of three interviews, Loeslie discusses the Mercy Wheat Program, which aimed to provide food produced in the Red River Valley to starving survivors in post-World War II Europe. Fiorello La Guardia, the Director General of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration and former Mayor of New York City, visited Climax, Minnesota, to promote the program. Over 5,000 people came to the town, which has a population of barely over 200, to hear his speech, which was also broadcast nationwide on CBS radio. Loeslie shares his experiences in agriculture and food production, both as a farmer and as a member of the National Association of Wheat Growers.
