Art Jones, Professor Emeritus, University of North Dakota Dept. of Art & Design, taught previously at the University of Kentucky and produced this piece when UK hosted the 1985 NCAA Final Four Basketball Tournament. Created by tossing a paint-coated basketball against a canvas board, the study was preliminary for the image on UK’s 1985 NCAA Final Four poster and for a “performance art” event (also planned by Jones) that involved artists competing against basketball coaches, players, and cheerleaders tossing paint-soaked basketballs at canvases—a glimpse of which was nationally televised during a game in the tournament.
