Part of UND in Grand Forks: Emergence of an Artful Relationship 2016
Born in Michigan, Isabel Snelgrove studied at the Chicago Art Institute, the Colorado Springs Art Center, Olivet College, and the University of Michigan. In 1930, after teaching at colleges in Michigan, Ohio, Texas, and Oklahoma, she was hired to teach art at UND. She served as Acting Head of the Art Department following the death of the first Chair, Paul E. Barr, in 1953.
Snelgrove’s subjects included portraits, still life, landscapes, and abstractions. Her view of campus draws attention to Budge Hall (in the foreground), which was demolished in 1981.
