Additional Information

In keeping with 15th-century Flemish tradition, the subject is depicted with great interest in detail related to the natural world—including plant, animal, and architectural forms. The figures of Joseph, Mary, and the infant Christ occupy the middle ground, while details beyond them draw the eye more deeply into the picture. The bluing of the background suggests the use of atmospheric perspective, but without any loss of clarity in distant forms.
