Additional Information
In an era when art training was difficult to obtain for women in the United States, Mary Nimmo Moran had a distinct advantage—she was married to the well-known American landscape painter, Thomas Moran. Although this etching likely depicts a site near the Morans’ East Hampton home on Long Island, the title borrows a line from a traditional ballad from Mary Moran’s native Scotland. Her evocative, atmospheric image captures that moment between dusk (gloaming) and nightfall (mirk) when cattle (kye) return from the pasture.
