Abstract
Oral history interview with Bill La Plante of the U.S. Navy and a prisoner of war during the Second World War. La Plante joined the Navy in 1939 and served aboard a submarine, the USS Canopus. The submarine sustained extensive damage off the Philippine Islands in December 1941 and January 1942. The survivors joined U.S. forces fighting on Corregidor. La Plante was captured by the Japanese Army in May 1942 and imprisoned at Fukuaka POW Camp 1. He was liberated following the Japanese surrender in August 1945.
William Arsene La Plante was born in Cut Bank, Montana, on 30 August 1919 and died on 30 October 1999. He is buried in Grafton, North Dakota.
