Artist Bio
Thomas Nast was a German-born political cartoonist born in 1840. At the age of six his family moved to New York City, where he attended school for a short time but dropped out because he preferred drawing to his studies. Nast attended the National Academy of Art, but once his family couldn't afford the tuition he got a job as an illustrator in 1855. He is best known for his sketches of the Civil War, and his work in political caricatures at Harper's Weekly.
