Description
"A man in protective gear sits upon a swing suspended by a crane, holding a water hose trailing up from the ground. The granite statue of a young Civil War soldier next to him, posed with a Springfield rifle barrel against his chest, stands in the triangular St. Mary’s park, along Belmont Road across from St. Mary’s Catholic Church and School. The statue includes a large placard with ""Names of past and present members the Willis A. Gorman Post,"" whose Grand Army of the Republic unit supported the creation of this monument. It was gifted by Grand Forks Herald founder George B. Winship who hired contractor N.C. Peterson of Minneapolis to design it.
Three men in suits and garrison caps, one reading ""Post Commander. 1965-66. Grand Forks, N.D."", look on. In the background is a truck with ""Dakota Signs, Grand Forks, N.D."" painted on the passenger cab door."
