Description
The image shows an ice harvesting crew of the Grand Forks Ice Co. lined up before one group of ice houses. All the ice houses occupied the two block area outlined by Lincoln Drive and Plum, Euclid, Pakenham Avenues. When there were no refrigerators, as such, ice was used in the summer for cooling purposes. Some 12,000 tons of ice would be cut into 3 foot squares from the river at Lincoln Park. A team of horses and sled would haul the ice to the ice houses where it was packed in sawdust. Photo taken in 1918.; halftone image on cardboard backing. (Paraphrased back caption with corrections)
