Abstract
Created for: North Dakota Department of Public Instruction, Phase Two and Three Report
This study addresses the findings of Phase I to develop a comprehensive understanding of the North Dakota principalship. The purpose of the exploratory sequential design was to develop 5 and test an instrument that leads to a greater understanding of the differences between rural and non-rural principal experiences (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2007). Phase II of the study was qualitative, structured interviews with 31 North Dakota principals to understand their experiences and perceptions conducted via Skype and phone. Phase III was quantitative to test the findings of Phase II on a larger scale and develop an instrument to understand principal experiences. In the quantitative phase III, an instrument was developed and data was collected from North Dakota principals. Qualitative data was collected initially to explore the experiences of North Dakota principals in more depth and identify themes, principal responsibilities and challenges that led to the development of the quantitative instrument tested and administered in Phase III (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2007).
