Abstract

Study region: Oakes aquifer, Northern Great Plains (NGP), North Dakota, USA Dataset focus: This dataset contains hydrologic model outputs and input parameters used to estimate groundwater recharge in the Oakes aquifer for the 1991–2024 water years. Recharge was simulated using the Cold Region Hydrological Model (CRHM) and HYDRUS-1D, with hourly climate data and field-based observations of snow water equivalent (SWE) and multi-depth soil moisture at ten sites collected during 2022–2024. The dataset includes model parameters, HRU characteristics, and simulated recharge fluxes, along with associated input climate and soil data. Key insights from the dataset: Simulations capture the contributions of rainfall and snowmelt to groundwater recharge, the effects of soil freezing on infiltration, and the spatial variability of recharge related to soil texture, land cover, and topography. This dataset provides a comprehensive resource for understanding process-based groundwater recharge estimation in cold regions and can be used for further modeling, validation, or comparative studies.
