Description

Dan Rylance (left) and Senator Milton Young stand in the Special Collections Manuscript Vault at the Chester Fritz Library. Boxes and a microfilm reader line the vault. The Chester Fritz Library opened in the Fall of 1961. It was financed by a $1million gift from Chester Fritz and $200,000 from the ND Legislature for equipment. In 1982, UND completed an addition. The University of North Dakota has the largest research library system in the state. The Chester Fritz Library together with the Harley E. French Library of the Health Sciences and the Thormodsgard Law Library contain over 2 million volumes and offer access to thousands of online resources. The Chester Fritz Library is the main library in the system and is designated a U.S. Patent and Trademark depository and a regional depository of U.S. Government publications. The Library's Special Collections Department preserves a unique, historical records and offers a large collection of genalogical resources. Three branch libraries: the Energy and Environmental Research Library, the F. D Holland Geology Library and the Gordon Erickson Music Library provide a focused services for subject collections.
