Additional Information

Eugene Delacroix is best remembered for his politically inspired paintings, such as The Massacre of Chios and Liberty Leading the People, but much of his other art was inspired by literature. The print on display is from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust, which contained nineteen lithographs. Because of their unconventional large format and emotionally charged style, Delacroix's freely drawn images were not received well by his contemporary middle-class public as book illustrations.
