In this audiovisual recording from Thursday, March 31, 2005, as part of the 36th Annual UND Writers Conference: “Hope/Illusion,” Charles Johnson, Jane Urquhart, and Virginia Martinez participate in a panel called “Hope and Illusion in Writing.” The panel opens with a discussion of hope in the face of extreme suffering, using concentration camps and slavery as primary examples. The panelists also discuss why people write, publishing and censorship, the politics of authorship, invention of character and working culture into fiction, the importance of multiculturalism, and advice for aspiring artists.
