This audiovisual recording from March 19, 1997 as part of the 28th annual UND Writers Conference: “Writing Nature: The Nature of Writing” features Annick Smith, Garrett Hongo, and Meeka Walsh forming the panel “Nature and the North American West.” Walsh opens by reading “Luminality and Longing,” a piece she wrote in response to the topic. Hongo discusses his early life in Hawaii and reads an excerpt from Volcano. Smith discusses her changing sense of nature and reads a parable she wrote about turning sixty. The panelists also discuss border conflicts and issues of race in nature, and preservation.
