Description
In this audiovisual recording from Wednesday, March 19, 1997, as part of the 28th Annual UND Writers Conference: “Writing Nature: The Nature of Writing," Annick Smith, Garrett Hongo, and Meeka Walsh participate in a panel called “Nature and the North American West.” Walsh opens by reading “Luminality and Longing,” a piece she wrote in response to the topic. Hongo discusses his early life in Hawaii and reads an excerpt from Volcano. Smith discusses her changing sense of nature and reads a parable she wrote about turning sixty. The panelists also discuss border conflicts, issues of race in nature, and preservation.
