This audiovisual recording from March 23, 1993 as part of the 24th annual UND Writing Conference: “La Literatura: Contemporary Latino/Latina Writing” features Ed Vega, Ana Castillo, Luisa Valenzuela, and Martín Espada forming the panel “Presence of the Literary Past.” The panelists discuss their sense of literature, their own experience with studying and discovering literature, personally influential work, the development of Chicano and Chicana literature, politics of Latino/Latina literature, the political relationship between the United States and Puerto Rico, advocacy for underrepresented groups, and their motivation to write.
