In this audiovisual recording from Tuesday, March 23, 1993, as part of the 24th Annual UND Writers Conference: “La Literatura: Contemporary Latino/Latina Writing,” Ed Vega, Ana Castillo, Luisa Valenzuela, and Martín Espada participate in a panel called “Presence of the Literary Past.” The panelists discuss their sense of literature, their own experience with studying and discovering literature, personally influential work, the development of Chicano and Chicana literature, politics of Latino/Latina literature, the political relationship between the United States and Puerto Rico, advocacy for underrepresented groups, and their motivation to write.
