Description
In this two-part audiovisual recording from Tuesday, March 23, 1982, as part of the 13th Annual UND Writers Conference: “International Writers,” Alain Robbe-Grillet and Susan Sontag participate in a panel called “Reality versus Realism.” The panelists discuss their philosophical and critical notions of reality and realism, the history of realism, and the realism of Dickens, Dostoyevsky, and Balzac, the effect of journalism on literature and realism, the fluidity of realism, and criticism of Flaubert's realism in Madame Bovary. The panelists also respond to audience questions about the role of the artist in society, the relationship between art and science, and the “real” as adjective or noun.
Interpreted by Paul Schwartz.
Moderated by Dr. Bernard O'Kelly, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
