In this audiovisual recording from Thursday, March 20, 1980, as part of the 11th Annual UND Writers Conference: “The Storytellers," Harry Crews, James Crumley, and James Dickey participate in a panel called “Oral Traditions.” The panelists discuss effective storytelling, the importance of oral storytelling, the experiences that fueled their storytelling, fact and fiction in stories, modes of writing narrative, and respond to audience questions regarding the advantages and disadvantages of prose, poetry, and film for storytelling, adaptability of fiction to film, the reception of their work among women readers, literary influence, and the prominence of ghost stories in Southern oral tradition. James Dickey concludes by orating a story.
