The Return of Lake Agassiz: The University of North Dakota and the Flood of 1997
Jan M. Orvik and Richard P. Larson
On April 19, 1997, Grand Forks and East Grand Forks were overtaken by the largest flood seen in the cities in modern times. Tens of thousands abandoned their homes. Scattered throughout the region, they could do little more than wait for news reports and worry about what they would find when the waters subsided. At the University of North Dakota, the academic year had come to an abrupt end. Students, faculty and staff were among the evacuated. A small group of UND personnel now had to decide how to protect, as much as possible, an institution worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Camp Depression: an Era of Hope and Opportunity at the University of North Dakota
University of North Dakota
Camp Depression opened October 21, 1933, at the University of North Dakota. It was designed to create low-cost housing for needy, but determined male students who wanted to obtain an education during the Great Depression. The camp consisted of six cabooses that were joined together and remodeled. Four cars were used for sleeping, a fifth was a combination kitchen/washroom, and a sixth was used as a study hall. Camp Depression residents paid their room and board by working four hours per week on campus. The residents shared cooking expenses, rotated mess duties in the kitchen and elsewhere, and enforced "quiet hours" for studying. Approximately 200 men lived in Camp Depression over its ten year existence. It closed after the 1942-1943 school year.
Released in May 1994, this publication examines the history of the Camp, as well as the young men who lived there.

Last Sabbatical : A Midlife Journey
Sophie Freud Loewenstein
The views of a professor of social work about her sabbatical leave overseas as a point of transition in her academic career, and as an occasion for challenge and reflection in her life and work, are presented. She left to escape the pressures of duties, obligations, strictures, and expectations that surround a relatively successful academic career, as well as to learn new clinical social work skills and to gain in personal development. Issues concerning midlife, professional relationships, relationships between male and female clinicians, and separation from a familiar culture and personal ties are addressed. Philosophical, personal, and professional concerns are shared and illustrated by quotes from literature and philosophy. (SW)

Martin R. Schock
"The purpose of this study is to identify all weather modification projects occurring over North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota for the period of years 1951 through 1976. It is hopeful that an awareness of these activities will help to: 1. place into perspective the development of weather modification in these three states, 2. assist with the administrative planning and technical design of future projects; and, 3. provide a background of information useful for designing evaluation schemes for future projects."
