Artist Bio
Fred Wessel gained his B.F.A. Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY and his M.F.A., University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA. Additionally, he spent three years studying at the Pratt Graphics Center in New York.
In the 1980s Wessel was focused on an aquarium series. Aquarium (Historical) comes from this series. In 1984, Wessel travelled to Italy and his artistic focus shifted. He is now known for his egg tempera paintings, a technique that was popular in the early Renaissance that uses egg yolk as a binder for the pigment.
Wessel is a very accomplished artist, author, and speaker. His artwork can be found in museums such as The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Brooklyn Museum, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Library of Congress, and many more distinguished institutions across the world.
