Artist Bio
Milton Clark Avery was an American modern painter born in Sand Bar, New York in 1885. Avery came from a working-class family and entered the workforce at the age of 16 to help support them. It wasn’t until his twenties that he joined a drawing class at the Connecticut League of Art Students that he became involved in the arts. After the death of his father and later his brother, Avery became the sole provider of his household and thus was never was never able to make his artistic pursuits his full-time career. After his marriage to Sally Michel he was able to focus more energy on his paintings since Sally worked to support them.
The impressionistic style of Avery’s work was too radical early in his career, but by the time abstract expressionism had taken off his work was seen as being too representational and was often overlooked. Retrospectively, his style has been compared to Matisse. Artworks by Avery are in the permanent collections of several museums including the Metropolitain Museum of Art.
