UND Art Collections: Art & Design Study Collection
Former Professor and Chair of the UND Department of Art & Design, Jackie McElroy-Edwards created thousands of surreal artworks that provide those who view her pieces a journey into the beauty of North Dakota. McElroy-Edwards’s screen-prints were a method of sharing what she and the people of North Dakota hold sacred – the iconic landscapes. After 30 years of service, over 300 of her works remain at the University.
McElroy-Edwards continues her depiction of North Dakota’s landscape in January Thaw. We see a ghostly figure of an elevator, covered in ice. It floats over a prairie that appears free of frost. Like Titanic II, it is a message about North Dakota’s decline in agriculture. The farming lifestyle slowly freezes away as the prairie continues to grow and sustain life.
A mass of white grain silos float against a light blue sky in the middle of a snowy field. Icicles protrude from the bottom of the silos.
Included in Land Escape: A Collection of Works on Paper by Jackie McElroy-Edwards at the UND Art Collections Gallery in the Empire Arts Center, 2018-2019.
