Artist Bio

Richard Dawavendewa (Lomahinma) was born in 1966 and raised in the Hopi village of Moenkopi, Arizona. In acknowledgement of his Native heritage, he uses his Hopi name, Lomahinma (which means "Handsome Sun in the Sky") to sign his work.

He received his MFA at UND. Aside from what he learned as an art student, his artworks are filled with subject matter with symbolic meaning that is deeply rooted in his life experiences as a Hopi, rather than in the Western traditions of his fine art training. The artist credits his grandfather, who was a well-respected elder, for teaching him everything he understands about the Hopi culture.
