Artist Bio
Royal Copenhagen, also known as the Royal Porcelain Factory, is a distinguished brand known for its hand painted porcelain. Founded in 1775 under the Danish Queen, Juliana Maria of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel-Bevern, the manufacturing began to imitate the blue and white porcelain products of China. The first pieces produced were dinning services for the royal family.
Every piece produced has been marked with a company stamp. The three waves in the stamp represent the three waterways that make their way through Denmark, the Great Bell (Storebælt), Little Bell (Lillebælt), and the Sound (Øresund). A while the design of the stamp has changed throughout the years the waves are always represented. The various versions of the stamp make it possible tell the age of the piece down to a specific date range.
A few original designs are still in production, while today the company has shifted towards more modern designs, including glass wear.
