Artist Bio
Geert Lemmers
Geert Lemmers is a photographic artist whose work explores fundamental questions of human identity and existence through richly symbolic, metaphor-driven imagery. Trained in Photographic Art at Fotovakschool Apeldoorn, Lemmers began his career in fashion photography and portraiture for illustration before dedicating himself increasingly to his personal artistic practice. The advent of digital editing tools proved transformative for his work, allowing him to fully realize the visual language he had been developing and giving him the creative freedom to construct the layered, conceptual images that define his art today.
Lemmers approaches image-making as a philosophical undertaking, using composition and visual metaphor to translate abstract ideas into compelling, resonant imagery. His projects are consistently people-centered, probing questions of origin, identity, and mortality. In his series In the Land of My Fathers, he takes up the enduring human questions of who we are, where we come from, and what awaits us after life on earth — drawing on the visual traditions and belief systems of African cultures to shape a personal and universal response that his own cultural background alone could not provide. This impulse to bring together distinct ways of understanding the world also shapes The Discovery of Heaven, where he weaves cultural and spiritual thought together with scientific perspectives, again in pursuit of a fuller answer to life's fundamental questions.
Lemmers's career gained significant momentum in 2008, when he was honored as Professional Artist of the Year — a recognition he regards as the true beginning of his art career. His work has since received international acclaim, including the Francisco Goya Prize in 2017 and the Visual Art Master prize, awarded later that year in Lecce, Italy, by the Accademia Italia in Arte nel Mondo Associazione Culturale.
In addition to his studio practice, Lemmers is an active educator, leading workshops in photography and art. He exhibits regularly, presenting his work in a minimum of two exhibitions each year.
