Artist Bio

Jessie Thorson’s work is a testament to her deep-rooted love for both the animal world and the Grand Forks community she has called home for nearly two decades. With a background in graphic design and sociology from the University of North Dakota, Thorson made the courageous decision to transition from graphic designer to full-time painter, bringing a unique interdisciplinary perspective to her art.

Additional Information

Prairie Surrealism:

The hawk's forward gaze evokes both surveillance of the landscape and the perspective of flight, recalling the ways contemporary research - from aviation and unmanned aircraft systems to environmental science and conservation - depends upon new ways of seeing. In this sense, Hawk-ey is less a portrait of a mascot than an emblem of interdisciplinary inquiry, where the natural world inspires technological advancement and innovation remains rooted in place.
