Artist Bio

Additional Information

Prairie Surrealism:

In this striking painting, honey bees, rendered at a monumental scale, move freely across two worlds: the familiar open sky of the North Dakota prairie above, and a mysterious dark ground below. The composition mirrors the logic of surrealism itself, where the boundary between the known and the unknown is not a barrier but a threshold.

North Dakota is the nation's top honey producer, a distinction it has held for more than two decades, yet the humble bee and its extraordinary labor often go unseen in the vastness of the plains. Here, the artist makes the invisible visible, pulling these essential creatures out of the background of our agricultural identity and placing them center stage looking curious and alive with purpose. Like the research and discovery celebrated by the University of North Dakota, the bee reminds us that transformation happens at the intersection of the natural world and human curiosity, in the quiet space between what we see and what we have yet to understand.

Description: A minimalistic landscape with a white house in the distance, a vast blue sky with clouds, and a large black foreground. There are three large honey bees across the canvas that make the landscape in the distance seem even smaller.
