Artist Bio

Wayman Adams was born in Delaware County, Indiana, in 1883. Inspired by his self-taught artist father, Adams moved to Indianapolis in 1904 to study under William Forsyth at the John Herron Art Institute. Adams later studied in Italy with William Merrit Chase in 1910, then with Robert Henri in Spain in 1912. He would move back to Indianapolis in 1913 and establish himself as a portrait artist. Becoming ever more popular, Adams moved to New York City in hopes of a larger clientele, where he taught at the Grand Central School of Art for a time. Although Adams is most known for his portraits, he also created porch scenes, landscapes, and even worked with watercolors sometimes.
