Additional Information

Avard Fairbanks, a nationally recognized artist, joined the staff of the University of North Dakota during the tenure of President George W. Starcher as a sculptor in residence.

The plaster study of a hand holding a book is an early study piece as part of another project.

Sculptor-in-residence Avard Fairbanks’ major project while at UND involved work on a statue for the campus entitled Invitation to Learning (or Alma Mater). It was intended to be a larger-than-life work in bronze, but never developed beyond the half-size plaster maquette that is documented here.
