Additional Information
PRAIRIE SURREALSIM
North Dakota is no stranger to the visual impact of "black gold" on the vast prairie landscape. Viewed through the lens of prairie surrealism, Maxwell's work invites reflection on the influence of oil beneath the prairie and across the lives of those who in habit it. Oil in ND connects the largely unseen geology below ground with visible changes in landscapes, livelihoods, and communities. Her commanding black, moving form can be read as an embodiment of that influence. Compelling, powerful, and unsettling, its elusive identity allows the promise of prosperity and questions of environmental consequence to occupy the same image. Here, the prairie's significance extends beneath its open horizons into a buried world whose resources shape life above.
