Additional Information
Walter Piehl is recognized as a leading proponent of contemporary western art. Sentimental and romantic in association, horses are a central theme to American western art. Traditionally more illustrative in nature, Piehl instead incorporates a highly expressive technique (akin to Abstract Expressionism) in combination with rodeo themes.
Piehl completed his undergraduate study at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, and his graduate study at the University of North Dakota and the University of Minnesota. Piehl has taught painting at Minot State University for more than three decades.
